Li Yangbing was a very important xiao zhuan (small seal style) scholarships expert in Tang Dynasty. He collated Shuo Wen Jie Zi and influenced the study of Chinese characters greatly. His xiao zhuan calligraphy also won high praise. Li Yangbing was regarded as the greatest xiao zhuan master after Li Si. Some scholars held that Li Yangbing's name should be pronounced as 'Li Yangning', because Shuo Wen Jie Zi said that 'bing' was the original character of 'ning'. But such idea is wrong and my paper will disprove it. Li Yang-bing collated Shuo Wen Jie Zi and made remarkable contributions, nonetheless scholars criticized his rootless guesswork and improper alterations. The most significant criticism came from Xu Kai's Shuo Wen Jie Zi Xi Zhuan, Qu Wang Pian. Afterwards, many scholars opposed Li Yangbing's conceptions. My paper will demonstrate that although many of Li 's conceptions and calligraphic writings might be wrong, but we could still find valuable ones. How did Li get such insights? What were his bases? These questions are the key points of my paper. |
