This study utilized the simplified drum-buffer-rope (SDBR) method of the theory of constraint (TOC) to identify the bottleneck ports in the North American line. In particular, it calculated different port utilization rates by vessel operations and obtained the highest port utilization rate from the initiating load port to the terminal unloading port by assuming that the highest port utilization rate was the bottleneck port. The Monte Carlo simulation was used to simulate actual data spanning ten years in the North American line and verify bottleneck ports.
