This article is about the application of Orem's Self-Care Theory to adolescents with first-time cancer. Orem's Self-Care Theory emphasizes the individual's active participation in the maintenance of health and self-care ability. Adolescents with first onset experience physical, psychological, and social challenges and need increased self-care capabilities and support. With the application of Orem's Self-Care Theory, caregivers can provide supportive and educational nursing interventions to help adolescents problem- solve, make decisions, and improve their self-care skills. Educationally and hands-on, teens can learn to manage illness, implement self-care behaviors, and build support systems. Ultimately improve their quality of life and physical and mental health. |
