Purpose: To explore senior’s psychological needs of respect achieved through intergenerational learning. To examine changes before and after intergenerational learning in high school student’s impression of the elderly, cognition of senior’s psychological needs for respect, and respect behaviors for the elderly. Methods: 28 pairs of seniors from long-term care institute and students from high school within Hsinchu city were randomly matched to participate in six courses of senior fall prevention. The qualitative data were collected through observation, presentation, interviews, and reflection records. Results: Intergenerational leaning met the four major senior psychological needs of respect: Care Respect, Acquiescent Respect, Linguistic Respect, and Salutatory Respect. Intergenerational learning also changed high school student’s stereotype towards seniors. The Intergenerational learning improved high school student’s cognition of different aspects in psychological needs, including Care Respect, Acquiescent Respect, Linguistic Respect, Salutatory Respect and Consulting Respect. High school student’s elderly respect behavior was further improved through intergenerational learning. Promoting intergenerational learning to meet the senior’s psychological needs for respect and to enhance student’s respect for the elderly is recommended. |
