According to historic records, Tung-p'u base camp was the Ch'ing Dynasty headquarters of military commander Wu Kuang-liang during his construction of the cross-island Central Road, known as the Pa-t'ung-kuan Ch'ing Dynasty Ancient Trail. Tung-p'u may also be the largest base camp along the Central Road, as well as Wu's principal supply center. The authors conducted archaeological excavations at the Tung-p'u base camp in 1987 in order to provide data concerning the layout of the military installation, the kinds of weapons and equipment in use, and the nature of the soliders ' day-to-day lives. Ch'ing Dynasty Han Chinese artifacts including both unglazed and glazed ceramics, porcelain, coins, and bullets were recovered from the excavations. These remains were almost definitely left by Wu Kuang-liang's soliders, who occupied the Tung-p'u base camp between the years 1875 and 1877 during construction of the Central Road. |
