Based on phonetic distribution, connected speech, rhyming, and syllable structure, it is concluded in this paper that the syllable final -ʔ in Southern Min dialects is a tone feature rather than a true consonant. The same interpretation seems to hold true for other Chinese dialects such as the Wu, Fujou and Nanchang dialects. It is suggested that we make further studies and look into the nature of -ʔ in all other Chinese dialects and Sino-Tibetan languages. |
