The Gyarong dialects are spoken in China, in the northwestern corner of the province of Szechuan. We show on the map below the locations of the dialects we cite in our discussion, with the exception of Kham-to; Wolfenden, who studied the dialect of a speaker from this village, could provide no information on its location. The data on these dialects are from Chang 1968 and unpublished field notes made by Chang Kun in 1943 (Tzu-ta dialect), Chin 1949 (Tsa-ku-nao), Chin et al. 1957, 1958 (Suo-mo), von Rosthorn 1897 (Wassu [including Muphing], Pati, Pawang, Hanniu), Wolfenden 1936 (Kham-to), and Edgar 1932 (Chos-kia). |
