The purpose of this paper is to explore the syntactic and .semantic differences as well as similarities between the negative markers bo 'not (have)' and m 'not (want)' in Taiwanese, one of the Chinese ''dialects'' spoken in Taiwan. Most of the other negative markers can be shown to be similar to either of the two. So I shall limit myself to discussing only these two and touch on the others when they are relevant. Such a study has a bearing on language universals because the phenomenon of this particular language is shared by other languages, genetically unrelated as well as related to Taiwanese. On the basis of evidence from Taiwanese, we will be better justified in formulating some universal base rules. |
