Well over two hundred years ago there appeared m Paris a French translation of a 9th century Arabic manuscript on China and India which created considerable excitement in the learned world of that time. The Arabic work consisted of two parts alleged to have been written by two persons, a merchant named Sulaymān and one Abu Zaid Hasan. This paper is concerned with the first part, the date of which corresponds to A. D. 851, and is attributed to Sulaymān. It is composed of a number of observations of varying length on different aspects of Chinese life and culture in general, and purports to have been written by one who had lived and travelled in China. |
