In a most interesting article published in a recent number of this journal, Professor Mary Haas discusses the tones of four Tai dialects (Siamese, Nakhonsithammarat, Chiangmai and Roi-et) in terms of the dual system of tone categories and consonant classes commonly postulated for Proto-Tai. It happened that at the time the article. came into my hands one of my postgraduate students in London, Miss Vichintana Chantavibulya, had just completed as part of her work for the London M. A. Degree a thesis on the phonetics and phonology of her own Southern Tai dialect, which is that spoken in Songkhla, (Singora), some hundred miles to the' south of Nakhonsithammarat. |
