The problem of evil has always buffled philosophers. Chinese philosophers have had no more satisfactory solution than their Western counterparts. But the problem has been a real one to them and persistent attempts have been made to solve it. In Chinese philosophy the problem is closely tied up with that of human nature. Early Chinese thinkers, being primarily interested in government and morality, did not tackle the problem of human nature as a metaphysical one and whether human nature is originally good or not. They accepted it as a fact and were chiefly concerned with what to do with it for the benefit of the individual and society. They spoke of ''regulating nature 節性.'' |
