從臻櫛兩韻性質的認定到韻圖列二四等字的擬音

On the Nature of the Rimes Chen 臻 and Chih 櫛 and Its Implication for Reconstruction of Characters in the Second and Fourth Divisions of the Rime Tables

切韻臻櫛兩韻屬二等韻屬三等韻的性質如何，關係整個韻圖列二等及四等字的韻母擬音，是一個值得重視的問題，學者注意力卻是不足。衡情論理，切韻既能別臻櫛於真質之外，顯然臻真、櫛質之間必其韻母音有不同。但由於學者自始在莊章兩系反切上字系聯上產生了誤解，以致不能識得莊系字的韻母形態；影響所及，臻櫛二韻的性質不能認定，而原本可以從此獲得的擬測中古音的消息，也便遲遲未能引發。

Chen 臻 and Chen 真, Chih 櫛 and Chih 質 when added together, each pair forms a complete third division rime; but the Ch'ieh-yün 切韻 separates each pair into two rimes. The rime tables place Chen 臻 and Chih 櫛 in the second division; so the separation of Chen 臻 and Chen 真, Chih 櫛 and Chih 質 would seem to be the difference between second division rimes and third division rimes. However, Chen 臻 and Chih 櫛 only have ch'ih-yin (齒音: supradental sibilants). This is unparalleled by any other second division rime.
