Earlier attempts to classify the male and female forms of speech in Mayrinax, the most conservative Atayal dialect, were made in Li (1980b) and Tsuchida (1981b). Both papers were written when only limited data were available for vocabulary with sex differentiation in speech: only 68 lexical items were listed in the former and 85 items in the latter. Now that more lexical items, 107 items plus 38 reconstructed forms, with sex differentiation in form have been collected so far, it is necessary to make a revised classification. Due to limited space, I did not discuss the problem of classification in Li (1982b). |
