My first introduction to Chinese dialectology and the Min dialects was in a seminar given by Professor Y. R. Chao in 1963 in which we worked on recording material from the Foochow dialect. In one of our sessions I recall that Professor Chao mentioned that he had always wanted to do a survey of the Fukienese dialects, but that due to various circumstances he was never able to carry out this wish. The most he had been able to do was to make some sketchy notes on one or two dialects one of which was the Shaowu 邵武 dialect spoken in the northwestern part of the province; in addition to writing down a few character readings, he had also recorded some materials on an aluminum disk. |
