This paper attempts to reconstruct initial consonants of a Northwestern Chinese dialect at the encl of the 12th century on the basis of Chinese-Tangut transcriptions in the Chang-chung-chu (The Pearl in the Palm), a Chinese-Tangut vocabulary compiled by Ku-le Mao-ts'ai in 1190. Methodological problems involved in the reconstruction are briefly discussed in chapter II. Chapter III deals with individual initial consonants. Chapter IV summarizes the sound changes from Middle Chinese (600 A. D. ) to the dialect (12th cen. A. D.). |
