Yi Zongkui‘s Xin Shishuo is the first Shishuo-style work published after the end of the traditional imperial regime and the founding of the Republic of China. It has a special significance in both the reception history of Shishuo literature and the cultural history of the Republic of China. In the preface of Xin Shishuo, Yi Zongkui regarded the book of Yiqing Liu as the ancestor of Shi Shuo literature, and recounts how he had been deeply influenced by the book since he was a child. The entries of the book follow the compilation of Yiqing Liu’s Xin Shishuo Xin Yu, and also take “Virtuous Conduct” as the opening chapter of the book. This article analyzes how Yi Zongkui used the legal framework to reshape the model of personality in the post-imperial era through the by three levels. There are “moral cultivation”, “social ethical responsibility”, and “interpersonal interaction skills” model. The author also believes that through the analysis of these three levels, not only can we get a glimpse of the ideological background between the lines of Xin Shi Shuo-Virtuous Conduct, but also let us understand how Yi Zongkui, who lived in an era of turbulence between traditional and new cultures, positions the life goals of intellectuals in the new era. |
