Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is amultifunctional neurotrophic factor that is abundant in the brain. It is especially important for strengthening neural networks and is akey regulator of central synaptic functioning. When synaptic functioning is disrupted, diseases of neurocognitive dysfunction, such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD), may ensue. The authors of this paper focused on methods to increase BDNF and compiled evidence of apossible link between BDNF and AD, which can be divided into two pathways: the direct (endogenous) and the indirect (exogenous). Existing studies have confirmed that abalanced nutrient supply and regular exercise are important strategies that indirectly increase BDNF and improve cognitive functioning, and that the two may complement each other. It is hoped that this information will be helpful in the future treatment of AD patients. |
