Dansai is located along the border between Thailand and Laos. Local people call themselves “Tai-Lao”. Dansai residents hold the great merit-making ritual (Boonluang) every rainy season, and pray to the local ghosts to keep misfortune away from them. Boonluang is also known as “Phi Ta Khon Festival”, and is characteristic of the local Dansai culture. This paper studies the Phi Ta Khon Festival through ethnography and analyses the “schema” of how to construct Boonluang in terms of religion, national consciousness, tourism economy and local education in Dansai. |
