The current paper seeks to make a brief, yet, to the extent possible, extended comparison of Taiwan's New Southbound Policy (NSP) announced in 2016, and the Eastern Opening Up Policy (EOP) of Hungary (2010-). Although the comparison between the two may seem to be unusual, the motives of the two entities show similarities. Taiwan and Hungary occupy small land with relatively small population - the former being significantly more densely populated though. Both economies are export-oriented, deeply integrated in global value chains (GVC), and largely dependent on and integrated to culturally and geographically close economic entities, that are much larger than themselves, i.e. China and the EU. |
