Right from the time homo sapiens discovered 'fire' -- which made them masters of their universe -- all this harnessing of energy from human and animal muscles, to wind, sun, wood, coal, oil, gas and fissile materials has had both constructive and destructive sides. And as this continuous harnessing of energy facilitated human settlements and triggered evolution of social institutions from family to clans to kingdoms, to nations, magnitudes of both constructive and destructive outcomes of this ever increasing human control over energy have increased exponentially. Especially, it is the destructive side of energy that has often provided major watersheds in human evolution and this negative image of energy has lately come to dominate patterns and discourses of human and international relations with violence (read war) becoming the ultimate arbiter of interstate conflicts. |
