For a long time, Economic Nationalism has been seen as one of the three paradigms in IPE alongside with Liberalism and Marxism. In contrast to Liberalism and Marxism, however, Economic Nationalism has seen very little research done within its theoretical domain. In order to narrow this gap in IPE scholarship and to follow up on a recent trend of growing scholarly attention on this subject, this paper revisits the literatures of economic nationalism and explores possible analytical approaches. By doing so, this paper realizes that the core assertion of economic nationalism is to secure economic autonomy, which refutes the dichotomy between economic liberalism and economic nationalism and argues that a variety of economic policies are compatible with this assertion. The defining nature of economic nationalism is nation-building through economic policies. This paper finds that there are two approaches to research on economic nationalism, one being a positivist causal study and the other a post-positivist constitutive study. In combination of the two approaches, this paper develops an integral analytic framework consisting of three aspects of problematique: targets, instruments, and distribution as a tentative conclusion. |
