Indigenous people enthusiastically reconnect with their cultural tradition in contemporary Taiwan. Thoughts and efforts of the younger generation are integrated into crafts. This article explores the thoughts and practices of Truku weavers, including the way in which they imagine the past, the relationship between reproduction and improvisation, and the meaning of culture under revitalization. It is argued that weavers identify themselves by their relation with the past. However, they also reimagine the past, and change is not unacceptable. Thus, we can feel the flow of time on crafts, and we can see the flow of crafts through time. In the end, the diversity of Truku weaving is observed and described. |
