In 1628, Georgius Candidius wrote his“Discours ende Cort verhael, van’t Eylant Formosa”and set out the most important source about Taiwan for the Europeans in the early modern period. Today it is still an indispensable source for the studies on the Formosan indigenous people in the seventeenth century. The“primary editions”of Candidius’s“Discours”had been clarified by senior scholars, but these“primary editions”do not constitute a complete image of Taiwan studies in early modern Europe. This study reviews how European scholars cited, paraphrased, and plagiarized Candidius’s“Discours”in the early modern period and finds a trend from full quotations to fragmental citations. Food digestion processes are a vivid metaphor to describe the development from quoting complete texts to fragmental citations of Candidius’s report. Finally, this study would offer a comprehensive genealogy of digesting Candidius’s“Discours”into Taiwan studies in early modern Europe. |
