Chen Tuan proposed the integration of Yi-diagrams and Hongfan in the Northern Song Dynasty, devising innovative Yi-diagrams and exceling in creating new ways of divination with the use of numbers. Among his supporters and followers, Cai Chen formulated a new approach in the Southern Song Dynasty by interpreting Hongfan with “Fanshu” and thus formed the study of Hongfan, which had a prevailing influence lasting into the Yuan and Ming Dynasties. In the Ming Dynasty, Han Bangchi authored Hongfan Tujie, a typical representation of this school of thought, and reinterpreted and supplemented Cai’s theory with his ideas. Focusing on Han’s Hongfan Tujie, along with his Yixue Qimeng Yijian, from the perspective of the integration of Yi-diagrams and Hongfan, the present study aims to delve into Han’s new ways of divination formed by combining Hetu, Luoshu and Fanshu, discuss the important contents of his presentation of Yi-diagrams with numbers, explore his modification and reinvention of Cai’s theory, and offer an objection evaluation of Han’s role in the Yixue history. |
