Humans persist through biological continuity sustained by brain stem function according to Eric Olson’s Animalism. I examine Olson's Animalism and its reliability in revealing the nature of human persistence. Specifically, I analyze whether Olson’s Animalist view of the brain stem is plausible since he creates his Animalism by focusing on the role of the brain stem in retaining biological continuity. I offer a more reasonable Animalist view of human persistence, including not merely the brain stem’s role but the head’s role, than Olson’s Animalism. My Animalist view shows how humans can persist generally and in cerebrum transplant scenarios that Olson was not able to clarify. |
