During the course of our botanical survey, wild populations of Melastoma sanguineum Sims, heretofore unknown for the Flora of Taiwan, was observed from northern part of Taiwan. Melastoma sanguineum can be easily distinguished from other congeners in Taiwan because it grows up to 3 m tall and has subglabrous leaf surfaces, and spreading bristles covering stems, petioles, pedicels, hypanthium and fruits. Here we provide a detailed morphological description, illustrations and a key to the Melastoma species in Taiwan for identification. |
