February 1, 2021 brought shocking news to the people of Myanmar. Early that morning, the military announced a “state of emergency in accordance with the 2008 constitution” and detaining the president of Myanmar, the state counsellor, and many other political leaders. The stated reason for this state of emergency is the incapability of the NLD government’s action to justify the 2020 election result and thus the country is at stake. However, this state of emergency clause is misused along the road to democratization in the country. The Majority of the people in Myanmar take this action as a “military coup” rather than the “state of emergency.” |
