Since 1786, British occupied Penang and got a foothold in Malay Peninsula officially. From the beginning of the 19th century, written record and studies on Malay Peninsula by United Kingdom had gradually emerged. Before establishment of Royal Asiatic Society on Straits settlement, understanding of the British on the Malay Peninsula was mainly focus on surface, lesser concentration on depth and detail study, mostly depend on the record, edit, and data arrangement. The person who engaged in this we call it observers. Their works can be composed to five categories, publication of newspaper and periodicals, itineraries, encyclopedic writing, colonial archive, printing and publication business of London Missionary Society. This form of study and record had inherited by the late comer, and this becomes the tradition and resources of the English stream of Southeast Asian Studies. |
