Some critical changes have been made in Indonesian government policies toward Chinese Indonesians in the post-Suharto era. Relatively speaking, the policies are friendlier than the earlier ones. In the education arena, more choices are available. At the same time, China, the ancestral homeland of the Indonesian Chinese, has become an important actor on the world stage. Given this changing background, what kind of educational system would Chinese Indonesian parents choose for their children? Via snowball sampling, this study interviewed 29 Indonesian Chinese parents and students, with an upper- or middle-class economic background. The results show Chinese Indonesian families prefer an ”internationally-oriented” education system. The public education system and the Chinese-oriented educational system are less preferred. |
