Because of the overwhelming dominance of the People’s Action Party, Singapore has long been regarded as an authoritarian regime. Singapore’s Parliament has therefore been considered as a rubber stamp of the People’s Action Party government. This paper argues that Singapore’s Parliament does play significant roles and functions, including elite recruitment, managing political conflicts, and promoting ethnic harmony and accommodation. Based on the theoretical framework of Gabriel Almond and G. Bingham Powell, this paper will first introduce the organization and composition of Singapore’s Parliament, which will be followed by the analysis of three sections on the roles and functions of Singapore’s Parliament. |
