This paper presents my experience of assisting in the creation of a temporary exhibition for the Belau National Museum in 2019, with a focus on intangible cultural heritage and oral tradition. I adopted a co-curation strategy to embrace different perspectives throughout the process and produce content that offered a multifaceted perspective into Palauans’ oral tradition and worldview, based on the local knowledge, the explanations based on mainstream (Western) science and points of comparison from other Austronesian societies. I also investigated the possibility and difficulties of shared authority through the process of co-curation between international institutes and individuals. This multiperspective exhibition can create a space for diverse audiences to engage with Palau’s language and oral traditions and to reflect on their own. |
