Concerning the debate on "whether there is physical nature before issuance," launched by two Korean Confucian scholars-Yi Gan and Han Won-jin-in the eighteenth-century, most scholarship adheres to Yi's interpretation, i.e. regarding this thesis identical with "whether good or evil could be predicated of the original state of mind before issuance (weifa xinti 未發心體)." However, Yi's interpretation was criticized by Han. To retrieve the reason why Li deemed these two theses as identical, and why Han adhered to the original thesis, this paper reexamines the context of their debate. Via the concept of "heterogeneity of good," this paper makes Yi's and Han's views clear and distinct. |
