Mostly the design of the lightning protection of transmission lines does not refer to the lightning record of the surrounding environment. This study uses the data of a total lightning detection system to improve the lightning protection of 69 kV overhead transmission lines in Taiwan. In this study, two sections of such transmission lines in a high-frequency lightning strike area were selected to build a simulation model. The electromagnetic transient of lightning strikes on the ground wire and the cross-arms of a tower were simulated using the T-Flash software. The insulation strengths of the lightning prevention were proposed by affording 95% cumulative probability of the lightning current. The result showed that the success rate of lightning protection improved from 51.6% to 95%. The proposed method can identify and improve existing high-risk lines as well as confirm the safety of new circuits. |
