Only 6-7% of osteosarcomas are located in the jaw and represent a distinct entity from conventionalosteosarcoma of the long bones, which is the most common malignant bone tumor. Incidence ofosteosarcoma of the jaw reaches a peak at 30-40 years of age. Surgical excision is the gold standard oftreatment. There are three main subtypes of osteosarcoma of the jaw: osteoblastic, chondroblastic, andfibroblastic. Here we report a case of chondroblastic osteosarcoma of the jaw. A 56-year-old femalecomplained of diffuse swelling over the left cheek and left lower gingiva, along with numbness of the leftlower lip. Periapical film showed loss of lamina dura on #34-35 and periodontal space widening on #33.Incisional biopsy was performed and chondroblastic osteosarcoma was diagnosed. Surgical wide excisionwith flap repair was followed by chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Over a 6-month period of close clinicalfollow up, there was no recurrence. |
