With the advent of communication software, selling sex online developed. It integrated types of sex work and even took the place of traditional sex industry for a short time. As smartphones and social media such as LINE and WeChat have gained popularity among Taiwanese in the 2010s, online sex market was brought into sharp focus in Greater Taipei because of its high socioeconomic status. This study aims to explore the newly emerging sex industry, focusing on emerging tourism prostitution and its use of social media, in Taiwan.Tourism prostitution in this study refers to foreign sex workers engage in selling sex in Taiwan via tourist Visa. They usually are arranged by the agent to stay in hotels or rent flat during their stay. The researcher conducted a descriptive analysis of prostitution data which is gathered by participant observation, that is, collecting pander groups’ everyday posts on LINE during July to December in 2017. Then, interviews are made with 3 panders in the business and 3 male consumers.The results reveal that firstly, most of the prostitutes in Taipei are from China, Malaysia and Thailand. Secondly, the characteristics of sex trade on LINE are identified as criminal organization and division and specialization of labor.Moreover, the factors in the following play important roles in the ecology of crime: social organization, mixed-use neighborhoods and transportation. The findings of this study can be used to inform policy and future research on foreign sex workers and the business of commercial sex in Asia. |
