Objective: To calculate the incidence and prevalence of Palindromic Rheumatism (PR) in Taiwan during the period of 2005–2012.Methods: The study utilized 2003–2012 claims data from the Taiwanese National Health Insurance Research Database to identify all patients with a new diagnosis of PR (International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision code [ICD-9-CM] code 719.3). We estimated the age- and sex-specific incidence and prevalence of PR during 2005–2012.Results: For the period of 2005-2012, the incidence rate of PR in Taiwan ranged from 3.01 to 4.29 cases per 105 person-years, with the prevalence of PR ranging from 16.21 to 41.95 per 105. Mortality rate of patients with PR ranged from 0.38% to 0.59%. The age-specific incidence rate was lowest in the 0-9 age group and highest in the 40-49 age group, with 0.12 cases and 6.40 cases occurring per 105 person-years, respectively. Female predominance in both incidence and prevalence of PR was observed. The female to male ratio for incidence rate was 1.25 and 3.16, respectively, in the two different age groups. Conclusion: The present study outlines the incidence and prevalence rate of PR in Taiwan for the period covering 2005-2012. Peak incidence of PR increased with age in both genders, however male patients experienced a later peak than female patients. Furthermore, female predominance, with the highest female to male ratio of 3.16 being noticed, occurred in the 40-49 age group. |
