"Since two years, global medical systems have been impacted by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. During this period, the virus has undergone several mutations and become increasingly infectious, leading to multiple cases of nosocomial infections in medical institutions in Taiwan. Implementing COVID-19 prevention measures in psychiatric wards is a challenging task because of the closed environment of the ward and the compromised cognitive function of its patients. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop a set of standard operating procedures suited to the current situation of the pandemic, especially focusing on infection control. In this pilot study, an Acute Psychiatric-Ward Pandemic Response Team was established based on interdisciplinary cooperation and the incorporation of the nursing standards of the infectious diseases control department in the acute psychiatric ward of a medical center in Taiwan. The team worked to enhance health management of the medical staff and inpatients in different dimensions, ensuring more precise infection control in the psychiatric ward and construing a series infection prevention procedures. The article describes implementing hand hygiene and respiratory hygiene, setting up areas for staff to put on and take off personal protective equipment, environmental cleaning, and infection control operations. It is hoped that these experiences could provide a direction for other psychiatric institutions that are still struggling to cope with the effects of the pandemic." |
