"In 1907, for the aboriginal administration missions, the Government-General of Taiwan found that warship bombardments effective to the Taroko tribes and Kbbu’tribes, which inhabited near the east coast of Taiwan; and, then, acquired the gunboat Senkaimaru from the Army Ministry in the next year. Senkaimaru was modified and equipped with quick-firing guns to serve for smuggling raids, shock bombardments, and freights of the supplies for aboriginal administration missions. The deployment of Senkaimaru caused great psychological intimidation of the aboriginals and enhanced the efficiency for the advances of the lines of the frontier guards in the mountain passes. Senkaimaru, the first gunboat specially modified for the aboriginal administration missions, thus earned the title as the“boat of the aboriginal administration”and was an embodiment of the Government-General’s adaptability to geographical conditions. Therefore, Senkaimaru has her historical significance and importance in the history of the aboriginal administration of Taiwan." |
