民眾詩多為基層民眾聲音之表露，由作家起而代言。日治時期台灣民眾詩，呈顯出相對於皇民文學之「迎合時局，配合國策的宣傳、口號詩的性格」表現出詩人屈服體制、現實的面貌。民眾詩的主要特色在於詩人勇於衝撞體制，真切描述當時生活情境。賴和今日留下來之現代詩雖極其有限，卻可還原日治時期民眾生活樣態，文本技巧多採寫實與白描等手法，語言質樸而明朗。賴和詩作屬華文白話運動推動初期，文字鍛鍊不足且多說明性之散文語態，但若以社會學的關照視野評估其現代漢詩的存在，仍然是日治時期具有相當關鍵的作品典範。
