"In Taiwan, the history of new Poetry talks (shi hua) dates back to the period when Taiwan was under Japan's rule. It was first raised by Yang Chi-Chang. Considering both on the poetry creation and the poetry review, poet-critic Yang wrote his new Poetry talks with a viewpoint of Impressionism. It is believed that in Taiwan, Yang is the pioneer working on new Poetry talks. To write his critique, Yang often summarizes a poem at the beginning to show his positive feeling toward it. Then he uses the language of poetry to express his subjective opinion. The ideas in Yang's head aren't coming out step by step; his thoughts are always jumping from one to another. It won't be very surprising to see him talking about A poet at this time but coming to B poet at the next second on the same composition. The author of this thesis believes those new poetry reviews started from Yang are very similar to the classical poetry reviews in the way of their expression of evaluation. Although Yang borrowed part of the language from Japan's Poetry & Poetry Criticism and he followed China's classic poetry criticism in his way of poetry evaluation, he is not an inferior copycat. The thesis is written to emphasize Yang's important features in his reviews for Taiwan modern poetry." |
