As defined in the “Senior High School Education Act,” comprehensive senior high schools focus on assisting students in selecting appropriate types of courses. Through the design of the school system, every student can take different courses according to his or her aptitude as a freshman and select programs that fit their studying interests in her or his sophomore year. This further helps open up the possibilities for diverse learning pathways for students and increases their competitiveness. However, in terms of practice, it seems that there is a gap between the policy and the status quo of its implementation. Therefore, from a student-centered perspective, the researcher(s) conducted a survey with comprehensive senior high school students enrolled from 2018 to 2019 Academic Year as participants. The research results showed that, although students generally recognized the importance of the establishment of comprehensive high schools and had a considerable degree of satisfaction with the status quo, the reasons why most students chose to attend comprehensive senior high schools has been quite different from the reasons why these schools were established. Therefore, this article suggested that not only do comprehensive senior high schools need to continue offering a variety of selective courses, but the explicit goals of the 12-Year Basic Education’s “startup phase” specified in the “adaptive counseling and learning assessment achievement system” also needs to be fully implemented in junior high schools. |
