In earlier times, cut-and-paste ceramic mosaic ornamentation (qian nian) mainly utilized randomly obtained materials, while such pieces are now made using mass-produced, standardized finished materials; due to the effects of limitations placed on project pricing and working time, the skills and knowledge of this traditional art have gradually become lost to younger generations of craftsmen. Nowadays, the needs of historic site restoration projects have led to a revival of the use of ceramic bowl shards and glass as materials, and the development of cut-and-paste ornamentation as a cultural creative industry, providing a new opportunity for the preservation and continuation of the craft. This paper examines the feasibility of the preservation and continuation of the traditional art of cut-andpaste ceramic ornamentation in terms of group work, the teaching of the art by individual masters to apprentices, and innovations in the craft. |
