Ancient papers are more vulnerable during preservation processes due to the intrinsic properties of the material itself and the impact of the external acid environment. As a result, they acquire different degrees of acidification. To evaluate the acidification it is usual to measure its pH value. In this paper, the cold water extraction method was used to acertain the paper’s acidity, the absorption or release of H+/ OH- ions from the paper fibers, and the impact of their migration on the pH value measured. Based on the experimental results, the cold water extraction method has a certain reliability for measuring paper acidity. |
