Analysis of Fetish Worship in Taiwan

臺灣民間器物崇拜，在人類文化資產而言，是一項寶貴而古老的史料。所謂器物崇拜、或稱庶物崇拜，源於古老先民認為自然萬物皆有神靈，即使是人工製作的器物，仍信仰其有神靈而加以崇拜。如城隍之神、船神、車神、門神、床神、倉神、灶神、井神、橋神、廁神、機杼神、碼頭神、掃帚神、桌椅神、豬稠公……等等，不僅多元多樣，而且源遠流長。在今天世界各地多無此俗或多已消失的情況下，臺灣一地仍能保存，值得重視與珍惜。

Fetish worship in Taiwan is an ancient and profound activity in the cultural heritage field. Fetish worship, also called fetishism, stems from the belief that everything contains a spirit. Assuming a spirit resides in every object, even man-made objects, our ancestors worshiped them as gods. These fetishes are extensive, diverse and long-standing, and include fro example such things as cities, ships, cars, doors, beds, warehouses, stoves, wells, bridges, toilets, looms, wharfs, brooms, furniture and pigsties. However, nowadays this kind of worship has almost disappeared; therefore, the tradition which still exists in Taiwan is worthy of being valued and cherished.
