Fetish worship in Taiwan is an ancient and profound activity in the cultural heritage field. Fetish worship, also called fetishism, stems from the belief that everything contains a spirit. Assuming a spirit resides in every object, even man-made objects, our ancestors worshiped them as gods. These fetishes are extensive, diverse and long-standing, and include fro example such things as cities, ships, cars, doors, beds, warehouses, stoves, wells, bridges, toilets, looms, wharfs, brooms, furniture and pigsties. However, nowadays this kind of worship has almost disappeared; therefore, the tradition which still exists in Taiwan is worthy of being valued and cherished. |
