This article describes an intensive survey and analyses of the Tang Dynasty remains of Tiantan, The main problems are flaking, denudation and crazing of walls; excess of low foliage and weeds; collapse of roads around platform-coping; ingress of grass roots into platform-walls, etc. In addition to the original design and architectural techniques of site, the causes of these problems are closely related to temperature and moisture, especially rainwater erosion. Based on these problems and their mechanisms, a series of appropriate protective measures are suggested. Hopefully, these results will become a valuable datum of future restoration interventions. |
