This paper attempts to investigate the land transport in the Jiangxi region of the Tang Dynasty based on the Yuanhe Maps and Records of Prefectures and Counties. The references include the road mileage from prefectures in Jiangxi and neighboring prefectures to two capitals and the information about the government inns and other related materials. Among them, the north-south post road, from Jiangzhou in the north to Hongzhou, Jizhou, Qianzhou, and Mount Dayu in the south, is the main trunk road. Many government inns are on this main road. The minor post roads or traffic routes in the region and surrounding areas are connected to this trunk road to Chang'an and Luoyang, and form Jiangzhou, Hongzhou and Qianzhou, the three important transportation centers. In addition to the north-south roads, the east-west land transport in Jiangxi that connects all parts of the south has gradually developed as well. |
