The purpose of this study was to explore the influence of participation in the filial therapy group on drug-abusing fathers in a drug rehabilitation center. This research adopted purposive sampling method. Six drug abusers were recruited in the research initially and four participants finished the research. A ten-week session filial therapy model developed by Landreth and Bratton (2006) was utilized in this research. However, the model was modified to execute the session every other week to accommodate the schedule of drug rehabilitation center. The first three group sessions were classes only; starting from the fourth session, an extra 30-minute play session was implemented right after the group session. According to the qualitative research approach, the data was collected by semi-structured depth interviews after ten group sessions. The data were analyzed by thematic analysis, and three essential themes were identified to represent the influence of participation in the filial therapy group on drug-abusing fathers: 1. The parent-child relationship was progressing from estrangement to intimacy in which the drug abusers felt familial love gradually. 2. Drug abusers learned to adopt a tendered attitude of discipline, and the parent-child relationship was more intimate. Drug abusers acknowledged that both they and the children needed familial love. 3. Drug abusers introspected that they have been absent in their children's growth, and expected themselves to be reborn again so that they could participate in the growth of their children. Finally, based on the research findings, this study intended to propose suggestions which could be helpful for future researchers and practical workers. |
