There are two Chenghuang (City God) Temples in Magong City, Penghu County. The temple discussed in this paper is located beside the original Wenao Local Magistrate Office (Former Wenao Magistrate Bureau), Xiwen Village. The main restoration work focuses on four statues of deities: Kai-Ji Chenghuang Ye (The Foundation-laying God), Zhen-Dian Chenghuang Ye (The Premier God), Qi Ye (the Seventh Lord), and Ba Ye (the Eighth Lord). The Kai-Ji Chenghuang Ye statue is made of camphor wood, and its deteriorations were slight; however, since it needs to be temporarily moved then reset on a plinth in compliance with the building’s renovation, it will require surface cleaning of dirt and reinforcement of loose parts. Furthermore, based on the era of the temple, and past renovations, combined with the evidence that there were six-layers of pigment on the deity’s shoes, we could infer the date of origin of the statue. The other three deities were made of unfired clay. There were thick layers of soot on their surfaces as well as pulverized clay and precipitated salt between the pedestals and statues. During the restoration process, we also found that the age of the statues was inconsistent with documentary sources. This paper outlines the restoration methods used, corresponding to types of deterioration to serve as a reference for later statue conservation interventions in the hope of retaining their historical value and sustainability. |
