Due to scientific, historical and cultural value, museums collect large objects as technology advances as well as scientific and technological devices fall out of daily use. Large objects differ from other museum objects in that they are heavy, composite and complex. As such, their preservation and conservation are critical issues. Meanwhile, common principles and guidelines within the heritage field do not necessarily translate into large objects. Many debates surround the principles of preservation and conservation of large objects in the conservation community. Here, the IDF full-scale wooden mock-up is taken as an example to review these principles, including issues of authenticity, minimal intervention, running working objects and sustainability as well as storage. We hope principles and practices implemented in this case could give feedback to the conservation community regarding the preservation and conservation of large objects. |
