The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of improving the communication ability through augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) teaching plan on a high school student with multiple disabilities including hearing impairment and intellectual disabilities. The research method adapted in this study was a multiple probe design across situations in single-subject design research. The independent variable was augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) teaching plan, the dependent variables were the immediate and maintain effectiveness of the capability to communicate with AAC device in three different conditions, including on afterschool curriculum, on classroom activities, and in student dorm. Go Talk 20+ published by Attainment Company was served as the communication device in the study. The experimental data were obtained and analyzed via visual analysis and C statistics to determine the effeteness. In addition, the teachers included in three conditions were interviewed to obtain social validity. The results of this study were as follows: After implementing the Augmentative and Alternative Communication teaching plan, (1) The amount of spontaneous communication with AAC device has increased, but the maintaining effect does not increase much.(2) The performance of communicating with AAC device has improved, but the maintaining effect does not increase much on classroom activities. Finally, according to the research results, some suggestions of AAC teaching intervention were provided for future study. |
